A commonly heard term, but a terribly misunderstood concept. I have encountered DOZENS of people who think they understand what a chakra is, only to find that they know just the bare minimum or nothing at all. Many people even shrug the concept off, believing there is no credibility nor validity to the chakra system. This is an obvious sign that majority of our population is living a very sickly and unsatisfying lifestyles- walking through life on auto-pilot, unknowingly living with overactive or underactive chakras.
The term chakra translates to “wheel” in Sanskrit, as they are intangible wheels of energy within every living human beings body. There are 7 predominant chakras, but there are 114 chakras in total, all of which are much smaller than the ones I’m mentioning today. Though if you are curious, there’s an article here you can read that touches on all 114.
Chakras play a vital role in our survival. They have been acknowledged for centuries in Eastern countries (and are now somewhat recognized in Western society, too) for facilitating our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. If our chakras are in harmony, our health is at its prime. If our chakras are out of balance, our bodies will eventually communicate these disharmonies in the form of mental or physical illness, and even before that happens, they send us subtle discomforting signals to let us know something is wrong.
The energy operating within these chakras is called “prana” or “chi,” and can even be referred to as “spirit” or “breath.” When the chakras are exerting energy, from body to environment, they rotate clockwise and outward. When the chakras are pulling energy in, they rotate counterclockwise and inward. Many people are unaware that they, themselves, are capable of manipulating these energies. It’s time to learn how to work with it.
To determine if your chakras are out of alignment, you first need to understand each chakra and their functions. Below, you will find the mantras, crystals, zodiac, and rights you should know about prior to working with each chakra and putting it back into alignment.
1) THE ROOT CHAKRA: MULADHARA (Vedic)
Color: Red Crystals: Garnet, Ruby, Red Jasper, Hematite, Smoky Quartz
Mantra: LAHM Zodiac: Aquarius & Capricorn Right: To Be Here
The root chakra is located at the base of our tailbone. It is responsible for our connection with earth & our body, as well as our families, or our “tribes.” It is associated and connects with our adrenal glands, the spine, our blood, and our reproductive organs.
When the root chakra is out of balance, the physical symptoms are as follows: inability to sit still, constipation, cramps, and an unhealthy weight (under or over.) The emotional & mental symptoms are as follows: feeling of disconnection from self and world, fear, inability to change, greed, nervousness, and low self-confidence.
To get the root chakra back in harmony, you should eat foods like strawberries, beets, any root vegetables like onion, potato, carrots, etc. Turmeric and garlic are great “spices” to use, too, only I would use them more often, rather than just as spices.
When meditating to balance the root chakra, the mantra which will activate the root is “LAHM,” pronounced like “MOM” with an L. Chant it loud and proud! Meditate with cleansed garnet, ruby, or any other mentioned crystals, think or chant your mantra, and you have a recipe for harmonized bliss. (Lotus pose and Child’s pose are great for root chakra balance, too.)
2) THE SACRAL CHAKRA: SVADHISTHANA (Vedic)
Color: Orange Crystals: Citrine, Amber, Tigers Eye, Carnelian
Mantra: VAHM Zodiac: Aries & Scorpio Right: To Feel
The sacral chakra is located a few inches below the navel. It facilitates our reproductive organs and kidneys and it is associated with the lymphatic system. It is the energy center of our emotions, our relationships with each other and the world, our relationship to sex and our sexual energy, as well as our creativity and our fantasies.
If the sacral chakra gets out of balance, it will manifest itself in these physical symptoms: lower back pain or tension, addiction to sex, urinary and kidney issues, impotence, and infertility. Just as the following mental & emotional symptoms will manifest: over emotional (or under emotional if under-active,) addiction to drama, lack of boundaries, stiff, numbness to emotions, tolerance of an abusive partner, and lack of self-esteem.
To create balance in the sacral chakra, you will want to eat foods like carrots, mangoes, oranges, tangerines, orange peppers, apricots, peaches, and any food that is high in Omega-3’s, like salmon. In meditating, the mantra which can be used to activate and balance the sacral chakra is “VAHM” like “MOM” with a V. Include citrine, amber, or any of the crystals mentioned above in your meditation practice and you’re bound to get your sacral back to where it should be. (Warrior II and Pigeon pose are also known to assist with your sacral.)
3) THE SOLAR PLEXUS (NAVEL) CHAKRA: MANIPURA (Vedic)
Color: Yellow Crystals: Yellow Citrine, Calcite, Agate, Pyrite
Mantra: RAHM Zodiac: Sagittarius & Pisces Right: To Act
The solar plexus chakra is located at the upper portion of our belly and it facilitates our central nervous system, digestive system, and metabolic system, as well as the liver and pancreas. Our ego’s identity, personality, and our will can be linked to the energy of the navel chakra, and often is referred to as the “gate of astral energy.”
When overactive, the following emotional traits will arise: anger & frustration (consistently,) inability to manage emotions and aggression, and acting overly critical towards yourself and your peers. When under active: lack of restraint or self-control, timidity, passive attitude, and low self-esteem. When physical illness manifests in the navel chakra, it can arise in the form of ulcers, gas, digestive issues and eating disorders, asthma, and nerve pain.
This can be prevented, reversed, or managed by eating foods to promote solar plexus health, such as yellow potatoes, yellow squash & peppers, and banana. It’s also recommended to eat foods high in fiber & complex carbohydrates. For meditation, the mantra is “RAHM” like MOM… well, you know! Bring your yellow citrine, calcite, agate, or pyrite, and the navel chakra is happy. (Bow pose and Boat pose are also very beneficial.)
4) HEART CHAKRA: ANAHATA (Vedic)
Color: Green Crystals: Emerald, Amazonite, Malachite, Chrysopase
Mantra: YAHM Zodiac: Taurus & Libra Right: To Love and Be Loved
Located at the front of the spine, where our heart is, the heart chakra is associated with the heart & chest, the immune system, lungs, hands & arms, and the thymus gland. In other aspects, it aligns with the love we experience, the compassion we hold, as well as the trust we give and receive.
When the heart chakra is out of balance, these physical symptoms will develop: poor circulation, troubled breathing, high or low blood pressure, breast cancer, and joint issues. To know if the heart chakra is out of alignment, observe to see if the following apply to you: inability to give or receive love, codependency of another, clingy, loneliness, unwillingness to help others, lack of boundaries, and inability to stand up for yourself.
If any of these sound familiar, it is recommended to eat foods high in chlorophyll, maybe even some spinach, kale, celery, broccoli, or even cauliflower and cabbage. Bring to meditation the mantra “YAHM” and a set of crystals like emerald, amazonite, malachite, or chrysopase, and the heart chakra will reward you with its harmony. (Bow pose, Cow, or simply the Cobra pose will do wonders for the heart chakra.)
5) THROAT CHAKRA: VISHUDDA (Vedic)
Color: Blue Crystals: Sapphire, Turquoise, Aquamarine
Mantra: HAHM Zodiac: Gemini & Virgo Right: To Speak and Hear Truth
The throat chakra, or the Vishudda, is located at the base of the throat, and can be linked to the thyroid, neck, ears, shoulders, mouth, and of course, the throat. The way we communicate with others and ourselves, the truth we speak and hear, as well as our ability to express our needs, are all associated with this energy center.
To know if it is not operating at its prime, observe the following physical symptoms: Laryngitis, throat soreness, throat cancer, dental issues, earache/infection, stiffness in neck or shoulders, and thyroid trouble. If you have trouble communicating your needs, speaking/hearing truths, are overly talkative, unable to listen, extremely critical, or verbally abusive, this may be your chakra imbalance expressing itself.
To repair this energy center, integrate some basil, cypress, peppermint, spearmint, or blue-green algae into your diet. (Blue-green algae is incredible for you!) The mantra “HAHM” is linked to the throat chakra and with crystals like sapphire and turquoise, you can make this chakra imbalance a thing of the past. (Yoga poses you want? Shoulder stand & Fish pose!)
6) THIRD EYE CHAKRA: AJNA (Vedic)
Color: Indigo Crystals: Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst
Mantra: OM/AUM Zodiac: Cancer Right: To See
My personal favorite; the third eye chakra, or as they say in Vedic, the Ajna! This energy center is located between your brows, forefront the pineal gland. Our self-awareness, intuitive abilities, visualization, creativity, as well as our ability to recognize the patterns of life, are all facilitated by the third eye chakra. The pituitary gland is connected to the third eye chakra, as well as our brows, our skulls, and our biorhythms.
If you notice these ailments, your third eye chakra may need some TLC: trouble sleeping, eyesight problems, headaches, seizures, and frequent nightmares/sleep paralysis. These emotional symptoms might show up, too: distorted/out of touch reality, need for authority, poor judgement, inability to focus, disconnection from inner self, as well as distrust, anxiety, fear of the future or lingering on the past.
When we meditate on our third eye chakra, it is very beneficial to integrate essential oils, too. Scent is the most direct way to tend to the chakra immediately, as the scent goes directly to our brain & impacts our pineal gland. Using oils like frankincense, sandalwood, rosemary, or patchouli can assist you with the TLC your chakra may need. Avoid fluoridated tap water and toothpaste, as it calcifies the pineal gland and diminishes our psychic/intuitive abilities.
The mantra for the third eye is “OM,” like home without the H, or “AUM” like mom without the m. Bring your charged lapis lazuli, amethyst, or sapphire to meditation to help strengthen the third eye connection. (Shoulder stand is a fun yoga pose! Try it for your third eye chakra.)
7) CROWN CHAKRA: SAHASRARA (Vedic)
Color: Violet (or White) Crystals: Selenite, Amethyst, Charoite, Sugilite
Mantra: OM or AH Zodiac: Leo Right: To Know
Located at the top of & above our heads, the crown chakra may just be the one that I see the most people having trouble with. The crown chakra is connected to our knowledge and awareness of different states of consciousness, as well as our personal connection to the universal energy. It is linked to the pineal & pituitary glands, the brain, hypothalamus, nervous systems, and the cerebral cortex. Pretty important role, wouldn’t you agree?
When the crown chakra is out of alignment, it will show up in these physical symptoms: nerve pain, dizzy spells, lack of mental clarity, and neurological disorders. It can also bring forward the following mental ailments: depression, schizophrenia, and other mental health disorders, addiction or closed off to spirituality, ignorant to bodily needs, difficulty managing emotions, inability to set goals, no direction nor desire to find a direction.
We can all agree that these are very common disorders in our society, just look at statistics. According to ADAA, over 450 million people around the world suffer with mental illnesses. This is absolutely not normal.
If you’re looking to get away from that, you can meditate with the mantra of OM (home w/out the h) or AH and integrate cleansed and charged selenite, amethyst, charoite, or sugilite. Scents like lavender, jasmine, and cedarwood are beneficial, too. (Shavasana and half-lotus are relaxing choices to bring to your yoga mat for the crown chakra.)
Now that you are aware of these vital energy centers, you can begin to observe and pay attention to which ones seem to be out of balance within your own energy system. One thing I should say, though, is that no matter how great your knowledge of the chakras is, you still need to confront the root of these disharmonies.
Is there any deep-seeded trauma you haven’t confronted? What about underlying emotions you’ve been avoiding? Take a deep look at the internal side of you. Mindful or guided meditations have proved to be very helpful with this, but you need to do the work. Show up for yourself.
